ART WITH A PURPOSE
Helping People Create And Enjoy Purposeful Art
I start with a simple premise: Everybody appreciates purposeful art, whether they realize it or not.
To understand this bold statement we need to answer a fundamental question. What is art, really?
Language
Art, like music, is a language by which we can communicate limited ideas through the emotions. The difference is in the way we receive sensory input. Art is through the eyes, while music is through the ears. So art is a visual language of the emotions. And since we all have the God-given ability to have emotions, we all appreciate these languages.
This, however, is not enough for people to like your art. You still need the purpose in your art.
Good Art
The purpose starts with an idea to share. But the artist must know how to effectively transfer that idea from their head to the canvas. To do that, there are two things they must know, context and elements.
Context
The creation of a masterpiece should be started, carried out, and finished with a clear idea to convey. This is not, “okay, let me create something beautiful,” which results in a photo with no direction. Instead, a declarative, contextual message should be created to synchronize the viewer’s mind to the same starting point of the artist. This message is simply a title, description, or even a poem written in such a way to help viewers understand and appreciate the reason for the creation of the masterpiece.
This is a nice artistic picture, but for anyone to fully appreciate it, I need to cue them into my purpose.
With a title, small yet poignant, this photo comes alive with greater meaning.
Elements
A scientist with a revolutionary idea, but without an understanding of the instruments before him, is like someone trying to build a house without a plan. So too, an artist without a fundamental understanding of how colors shapes, and lines interact to convey specific meanings, is hindered in his ability to reach people to the fullest extent.
Summary
When both of these things—your purpose, in a clear contextual message, and a broad understanding of the the elements are utilized—your art is heading in the direction of success. This does not, however, mean that everybody will like your art. We all have different desires and preferences of style. Instead, success is art that effectively conveys the artist’s intent to his audience.
